There's a huge range of all types of comics.
I'm not much of a comic book fan or collecter, but i like some internet comics.
I would start by just reading the funnies everyday, then start checking out books at the library.

Lots of manga fans on here, thats ok - but you really will like all the cool stuff that is out there comicwise.
Dark Horse comics have some great books out now. Joss Whedon is doing great things with Buffy (he's following up season seven)

Gerald Way of My Chemical Romance will be doing Umbrella academy, and it looks really good:

and if you would like to read some of the true classics in comics, here is my list of favorites ever. Many libraries now stock these on their shelves.
Killing Joke
Maus
Batman Year one
Preacher (proud Americans if you dont want to read them all)
Sandman (if you only want one book of it -- go for v4 "seasons of mists")
Contract with God
X-Men (Dark Phoenix saga and days of future past)
Miracleman (ooh this is really good)
Frank Miller's run on Daredevil
Sin City
League of extraordinary Gentlemen
Age of Bronze
Love and Rockets
Cerebus High Society
Concrete
You cant go wrong with any of these. true classics.
good luck to you!

Manga or comics?
Manga is a lot better. Vampire Knight is a very good, deep story. There's also The Vampire Game, but I haven't read it yet. Also, one really good short series is Millineum Snow.
I'm not sure about comics, but for manga, that's a good place to start.

Well i agree with even one when they say start with the manga way more exciting
this may be a bit old but I liked them maybe you will
Nana
Crimson Hero
Absolute Boyfriend (my fave.)
some of them may work for you check in the Shojo Beat for romace and drama or Shonen Jump for slighty kiddish and destructive setting pick out your favorite and buy the graphic novel.
