One of the few things I know is this, that most of the stories from people I know that have had a bad experience with the occult starts out with, "We were screwing around with a Ouija board and...."
OK, answer for the occult minded. The Ouija board is used by clearing your mind, and allowing whatever is out there to take a ride. If you don't know how to filter out the nasties, and IF you don't know how to protect yourself, it can be a very nasty experience. Not everything that floats around out there is nice, and some things out there are downright nasty.
Answer for the skeptically minded . The Ouija board works by the subconscious mind subtly affecting the muscles in the arm, and moving the indicator around the board. Mostly this is random movements, but sometimes it actually forms words and sentences. Many folks, who aren't very introspective (the TV generation) have numerous repressed emotions, repressed ideas, and other things that they haven't dealt with in their psyche, this is what keeps the psychiatric community in BMW's. Many are not ready to confront, or even to acknowledge these repressions, and can have psychological problems after playing with a Ouija board due to these unresolved issues.
Take your pick.
If you call, something will answer. The objective reality of what answers is immaterial, to the person calling, it is real.
I do use the Tarot, but I've found that the "Spiritualism" side of divination is fraught with danger for the unprepared, and if it's treated as a joke can often bite you in the rear. (needless to say, I follow the occult answer)

There are many tools that can be used to amplify a latent talent for divination. Ouija is just one of them. Whether any tool is beautiful and expensive or home made it makes no difference.
I've used Ouija Boards for over 60 years. The only time there were problems was when those who were working the Ouija believed in living evil and projected that belief into the planchette. The only time there was an incident was when two Christians tried to work the board without direction while I was out getting a beer. I don't know what they asked or who influenced the planchette the word "whore" was spelled out.
You and your talents, or lack of, is the only thing that will control the board. However, you can choose a partner or 3 partners in working the board. The other tools, pendulum or tarot cards both are handled alone, but with the questioner present.

I (nor anyone else) knows if you can call spirits and ask them questions with the board. What is known is that the planchette does not move by itself it is moved by tiny muscle movements in your fingertips that you are unaware are happening. This was tested years ago by Michael Faraday who always found evidence of physical force being used to move the planchette.
Skeptics dismiss the board for the reason above and because when blindfolded or the board is covered it produces mostly nonsense. However, this assumes that a spirit is not using your eyes to see and that spirits have God like powers to see through covered boards.
While it would be difficult to separate communication of spirits from ESP a better test would be to have a sitter by proxy. Have a person decide who they want you (and others using the board to contact) and then have that person not in the room or using the board. Then contact and ask questions. Then check with the person not using the board to see if you acquired any information known only to him or her.

We used to make our own out of a big piece of cardboard and a wineglass or ashtray turned upside down.
There are some freaky things that I have heard of happening from people I know really well. Things they actually saw. I've only had a couple of little things that were weird, but not dangerous. The rule I always heard was, don't use them alone, always use them with someone, and I have. I've seen them answer questions that there were no way the people with the hands on the glass knew the answers. Insane little questions. I've seen things that I couldnt' explain, so if you want to try it, I'd be careful and don't use it alone.

There are all kinds of Ouija boards. originally people just put a glass on a round table with cards around the table. the cards had letters and numbers just like today's version. Everyone put their finger on it and asked questions. I think it depends on who is present a tthe time. there is no doubt there are people who can see and hear things others can't , maybe they hear and see spirits, maybe they don't. I think it also depends on if their is a spirit near by , like in the house. it all depends on if you believe on ghosts or not. I do, and i have always been told to stay away from them. I have seen and heard some pretty scary things in my life and I don't want to take any chances so they are not allowed in my house or anywhere that i am.

when my ma was a teen her and her sister we're playing it at a friend's house. She asked "Who will I marry?" and the Ouija Board said "R.R." and she didn't know any "R.R" at the time. She dated my brother's father "R.V" and bore my brother. she left him after that and dated my dad "R.R" and ended up getting pregnant with me and she married him. So definitely!!!

if you have a sensitive using one--with you--for example-4-6 people--a door can be opened--and that can lead to bad problems--most people aren't sensitive-to the after life or other dimensions-so most people never have a problem--and they can be fun--
