why do emmo people stab themselves?

there are like a BUNCH of emmo people at my school and they stab themselves and stuff so why do they do it.

Some do it for attention, however there are some people who have alot of emotional pain in their lives and they turn to physical pain to try and get away from everything else. When you cut or stab yourself the pain is sharp and you cant really feel any other emotion that could hurt you or break your heart.
Granted it isnt the right thing to do but these kids are still young and not too experienced in life, they dont know any other way to escape the pain they are trying to hide from. Maybe they need someone to talk to, someone to relate to. Try not to judge them right away because of how they deal with their pain, just be understanding.

emo's are broken. In general they can't take joy from all the cool things life has to offer. They think it's all pointless. So rather than feel nothing, they would just as soon feel pain.

Of course that's genuine emo's. There are pseudo emo's that are just attention junkies. They care very much about having just the 'right' dark and gloomy look. They cut themselves because they really enjoy the OMG & WTF reactions.

On top of this, even among normal males, there is a bioligical desire to demonstrate toughness. In many cultures some kind of cutting and scaring is just part of proving you are a man.

Compare the typically minor damage of emo cuts to the often life threating punishment of football or boxing? Why do guys join the football team?

Humans are just clever animals. Taking damage to impress isn't even limited to our species. Males often engage in dangerous or damaging behavior to tell other males they are tough and by extention tell females they are sexy.

What can I say. Enjoy the show. It's usually being put on for your sake anyway. If you want more say OMG & WTF.

well first off, i am not even close to emo
2] not everyone emo is a cutter.

some do it because they believe opening their body will allow them to see inside themselves, and find out why they are depressed.

others do it for attention, however that is uncommon.

some do it to take their anger out. some punch pillows, some cut.
just PLEASE avoid ever doing it.
