Allright, I have been thinking about this for a while.
The average American takes a shower every day. In some other countries, they find this strange because they dont normally take a shower every day.
Really, Americans are being almost "brainwashed" into thinking they need to smell good everyday. Think about it..
we take a shower-
we use our fruity smelling shampoo
we wash our bodies with clean scent soap
we put on scented lotion
fresh smelling deoderant
perfume
fruity scented lipgloss
mint toothpaste
you pop in a beath mint every once in a while
etc....
do we really need to use all of this? Or is this just wasting our enviornment?
Yes, we want to smell nice and not stinky or smelly everyday, but some Americans go to the extremes.
People get so caught up in all of this, they are using every product they see on a commercial.
Im not going to lie, I use all of this stuff myself, but sometimes, we all need to stop and think about things like: do I really need this?

I confess , sometimes I shower twice a day. A shower is refreshing ans sometimes relaxing. Try living in a country where cleanliness is almost impossible due to lack of water and sanitary facilities and you will realize how lucky you are to live in the USA. Most people given the opportunity will bathe as often as possible.

As for scented shampoos and soaps hard to find unscented and most of us find a scent we like and stick with it.

By the way this is a very frivolous question.

I think we have "smell-phobia". Hygiene is one thing - smotheringo ourselves and our environment with cloying artificial odors is something else. I work in a hospital system where employees are not allowed to wear anything with a heavy perfume due to our patients' issues with allergies and asthma. (We are also a non-smoking environment.)

Potpourri, room sprays, floral deoderants (like women are botanical?), reeking detergents, soaps that can take my breath away...

I went through chemo and I was very sensitive to smell for months. It was never the normal smell of sweat or soil that made me ill. It was artificial scents that drove me to being violently ill. To this day, I can't even abide scented candles.

It is wonderful to not choke on the 17 layers of aromas with which we douse normally ourselves.

I think we also automatically apply negative labels to smells that are unfamiliar to us or that aren't popularly accepted.
