Years ago I asked a friend of mine "Have you started your periods yet?" She stared blankly at me and answered "Ovbious!" She did not seem to feel disturbed by the question but wanting to show she was not delayed, I guess.

Well, if you over hear someone else talking about it, you could start a conversation by that, that is how I told my friend.

If it's a girl just flat out ask them, expecially if their older then you.
My lil buddy who is 4 years younger then me asked me not too long ago. I don't find it awkward, she just wanted advice cuz she just started :)
