How do I get a life in my new city?

I keep in touch with my old friends from before mostly via facebook/phone sometimes but I'm now living in a city that's far away and don't know any peers in the new city. What are good ways to get a life here in my new city? Get a job?

Getting a job would be one way. Play all your cards
right, and you'll make friends out of some of your
co-workers. And, within time, they'll invite you over
to their house; you'll meet some of their friends...
a sort of chain-reaction. But patience is the key.
