I misunderstood it and made a mistake in taking it the proper way.

How exactly did you make the mistake?

Read the pamphlet or talk to the doctor who prescribed them on what to do.

Either you're asking the question for a "friend" or you're just curious. You didn't take it "the proper way"? Did you skip a pill, take the wrong pill, or take two pills? Or did you put it in another body cavity besides your mouth?

Continue taking the contraceptive pill, but use an alternate method of birth control (condom, diaphragm, spermicide, ABSTINENCE!) until after the woman's period.

You need to be a bit more vague with this question ;)
If you take a contraceptive pill once a day, regardless at what time, ie: morning, afternoon or evening, your fine. If you skip days, your screwed. In my past experience, I've taken my pill once a day, usually upon waking in the morning. But, there are new pills out there now, but I can't imagine that the way you take them has changed. But, I could be wrong.

Then, you need to use a back up method (condom) until the next month or when it's in your system for over 1 week to make sure it's regulated so you don't get pregnant.
