I want to use sand because it makes my set up look like a desert and thats what i like

I wouldn't risk it. Bark mulch, orchid bark, ground coconut fiber, and peat moss can all be used to help create a naturalistic enclosure. Other substrates such as newspaper, paper towels, or carpet are less attractive, but require less frequent cleanings.
