The left side of the brain is dominant over the right side. The left side wants to label something so that it can move on and devote its attention to something else.

It's just instinct. The left brain doesn't relax until there is a label. The sooner the label, the happier it is.

There might be a survival need for labeling. Left brain quickly determines, "Don't worry, he's a Gothic salad-eating Chinese jock. No threat there."

Without a label, the case is wide open. Could be a tiger. Could be a gunman. Could be the grim-reaper.

Tiger is one word. Jock is one word. One means death, while the other means safety.

That's why being an artist is all about amping up the creative right brain to slow down and take another hard look at something.

When people meet each other all they want to know is "what do you do for work?" Not that the other person really cares. It's just that it's easier to say, "He's a banker." Than to say, "He's a Gothic salad-eating Chinese jock."

I'm ok with labels as a survival mechanism. But I don't like them when people turn off or don't give you a chance once your labeled. We're ALL guilty of it.

Labeling isn't mandatory, just convenient.
Labels applied to people are inherently inaccurate and often derogatory. (Humans are far more complex than labels.)
When a person doesn't like aspects he sees in a fellow human, the temptation is to label the fellow human being and place him in a group. "Americans are always..."
Labels are generalizations with names.
Generalizations can be bad if used with malice. They can be based on fear: "That person scares me so I want to identify his type or group, so I'll be forewarned in the future when someone like him shows up."
Generalizations can be good, though, and most knowledge (science and technology, weather, history, predictions of the future, language itself and on and on) is based to a large extent on generalizations, and, yes, labeling.
Labels are a way to better understand reality, our world. Labels are not bad, but the motives behind them can be.

I think because we live in a world that is self absorbed. I also think some people feel better about themselves if they can talk negative about others. I really think labels limit our ability to really benefit from each others knowledge. I also think humans find it easier to find something negative to say about another than it is to find something positive to say. I don't like labels but they are a necessary evil.

Its just easier to classify people into phylums(if you will) than learn about them individually.. However for your close friends that you care about you are able to make them their own people. Its not a matter of labeling people so much as it is you know you like people like this so they get their own personalities while others just get grouped with the same personality!

And in worldwide places the place public training is extra effective...Germany, Scandinavia, etc., the style of fundamentalist Christians or Islamics is actual low. I agree with you. You try to be an individual, but people constantly want to throw you in a category. They consider society made of categories and you MUST fit into one. It's not right.
