I know more than a few members grew up in rural areas, or small towns, did you go out raiding gardens and orchards when you were a kid? Did you ever get caught doing it?

We used to go after the new peas, and the orchards. All those green apples, they never bothered me but some of my friends sure paid for eating them ..

One thing though because our families all had gardens and we knew how much work went into them we didnt do any damage.

Driving back from the store I passed an orchard and the apples are nice and red, really would have loved to climb over that fence and get a bag full. Maybe enough to make an apple pie or apple dumplings.

We used to raid the orange groves around where I lived. Old man Crawford scared the bejesus out of once when he caught us though. It was a Halloween night and his house looked like something you would see in a horror movie. We thought he would be inside, alas, he wasn't. Turned out he was a great guy, though.

You made me think of an adventure I had at 14. My sister, her boyfriend, my boyfreind and my self were gonna steal some apples from Smiths orchard. My boyfriend had a 1972 chey van, we thru open the side door, My sis her boyfriend and I jumped out and started throwing apples in the van, we must have had 100 of them in , then we saw lights coming down the road, so we all Jumped in the van, and my boyfriend took off.....only thing is we didn't get the door closed, when we took the first turn......all but 4 apples rolled out. Always said that was God's way of telling us not to be greedy.

We used to go pick hunkleberries along the road. Until we moved when I was 11 we had 2 beautiful golden delicious apple trees in our yard, I also loved to climb. Mom made & canned applesause and gave tons away, so no one needed to steal them. We had a garden too then, so we didn't have to raid anyones, but there was a groundhog who always 'took' an ear of corn when we were out the shucking it.

Yes, and 'robbed' apple trees. Actually they were crab apples (small apples in northern climes), that's what people called them, which were usually green, but we ate them anyway. We were always told that those green apples will give you a 'gut ache', but that never seemed to happen. I guess it was the thrill of sneaking into someones back yard at night and raiding the apple trees without being heard or seen. Often we were detected and hollered at quite thoroughly, and some times being chased, but never caught.

We also ate chokecherries and wild(native) plums (northern climes again), but usually ate them ripe. These berries and plums grew wild, so anybody could pick them.

In 1964, 3 brothers, another buddy and I drove out into the country and raided a watermelon field. We each had 2 on our shoulders and were heading for the fence when we heard a horse running. Didn't think anything of it until we heard a shot gun go off. We all dropped the melons and beat feet. The youngest brother didn't quite make it and we pulled him through the window as Silky pulled away.

I didn't exactly steal apples, considering that they grew in the parks system behind my house. But I certainly grew up eating them. Some of the most delicious, crunchy, juicy apples I ever had came from those trees!

The only problem was that you had to fight the wild creatures for them...the deer found those apples just as delicious as we kids did!!

I learned to climb high, and go for the just beginning to go rosey apples because of this. In fact, my love of "not quite ripe" fruit has followed me into adulthood...I just love picking still hard nectarines and peaches in the store.

I have even passed this love of not quite ripe fruit on to my two daughters, who have done the same with their sons.

As to gardens...I was too busy protecting ours from the neighbourhood thieves to want to do this to anyone else.

I was never fortunate enough to have a garden or even one nearby. Your memories sound so peaceful. All our vegetables came from grocery stores. My Mother and Father both worked so neither tended a garden. I sure would have enjoyed having one.

First no person is "undocumented" , illegals have the incorrect records. while you're in this united states of america illegally you're breaking the regulation. Immigration does not %. and choose the guidelines they enforce. They enforce all of them. in step with possibility we could continually enable all the medicine and gang bangers into our united states of america too. in spite of everything, we are profiling and being advise to them too. Get a grip.

Oh yes! Mostly watermelons as I like them better than ice cream. helped me to run like the wind. Recll one man hollering at us and as we ran off he belly laughed. We never did damage and only took what we ate right then and there.
