It's sort of a catch 22, without growth there can't be an economy, but the current economy's main focus is on the constant acquisition of goods where "replacement consumers" must be procured in order to have a functioning economy.

Logically, this is an unsustainable situation in the long run and can only lead to a Malthusian Catastrophe.

Without the medicine, science and technology of the industrial nations, earth could not support the population that exist today and billions would die if they collapsed. But humanity would survive, but life would revert to the miserable conditions that existed before 1400's. The world was closer to an Malthusian crisis then than now. You are assuming economic growth means using more resources, but growth is also a product of better use of resources.
