I mean we could have avoided so many situations this month alone like that poor girl in West Virginia

All the chip would do is make getting the body back easier.
Nothing beats parental observation.
chips MAY be causing tumors in pets...more investigating needed.

Since there is now some evidence that RFID tags can cause cancer, I'm not sure how wise this would be. Of course, as is often the case with things that cause cancer, there is always a trade-off between costs and benefits. The benefits of your idea would be zero, other than making a corpse easier to identify if the unfortunate child were to be murdered. A RFID chip is not the same thing as a GPS unit. Even if we could somehow implant a GPS unit in every child, an expensive proposition and a major piece of surgery to boot (where would you put it?), this would not prevent anything. No matter how much we want to, we can't protect children from every danger in the world.

Also, RFID tags are incredibly simple to hack (http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/24/verichips-human-implatable-rfid-chips-clonable-sez-hackers/), so the information in the chip could actually aid the kidnapper in the first place, either by cloning the chip and creating false sightings to confuse police or by decyphering the chip's contents for personal information and identity theft (Think: "Hi Susie, your mommy Jane told me to come pick you up from school...") The kidnapper could also use the RFID to track their intended victim in the first place, or build a RFID triggered bomb (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=2319734).

There is no such thing as a perfect technology, so even if you trust today's government to the ends of the earth with your privacy, you are always surrendering that privacy to some future malicious government. Or what about the most bribe-friendly contractor with access to the database? Or, someone with access could just be negligent as is the case whenever a laptop full of SSNs gets stolen (http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/local/scn-sa-laptop2sep14,0,6508874.story?coll=stam-news-local-headlines). So, unless you trust everyone from malicious thieves to negligent interns with the knowledge of where you and your children go day in and day out, then this might seem like a good idea. But if you trust strangers that much in the first place, why are you paranoid about such an unlikely occurance as kidnapping?

Sure, put a chip in everyone. Who cares about personal freedom. What right to adults have placing these objects in their children? The RFID chips won't stop the molesters, it will only help find the victims, sometimes.

The correct solution is good upbringing, teaching children the places to avoid. It won't solve all the problems, but in my view, its something that hasn't been tried. Oh sure, parents say they do this, but I find that hard to believe. Most families don't even share meals together anymore.

I work with RFID every day. The RFID pillars (that detect shipments in receiving) don't always work, and they can be fooled.

Plus, in an Orwellian society where a good idea is always misused... The signal could be used to track the child by people other than the parents. It's a passive chip, which means that it bounces signals back from a source.

Because some of us believe in freedom and parental responsibility. Perhaps everyone should get chipped. hmm? I mean everyone can be kidnapped, maybe not by pedophiles but adults are kidnapped all the time.
I would never chip my child like an animal to ensure her safety, I would be sending the wrong message to her, ensuring she grows up with the value's I don't want, mainly that its OK to give up every freedom you have in the name of safety, and lastly I would be reneging on my parental responsibility by trusting some stupid computer chip to keep her safe when that is my job.

If we were to RFID our children, it wouldn't prevent pedophiles from gaining access to them -- it would just make it easier for us to find them (or. . . parts of them).

Keeping our children safe is our duty -- not the job of a computer technician monitoring our children on a GPS satellite. . . if we are careful, and supervise them diligently -- then these situations can be avoided.

Or better yet, move all the children to a concentration camp so no "molesters" can reach them. Turn them over to complete government control you nazi. Freedom is not free, Hitler. It comes at a cost.

I 100% agree with Alexandra... That RFID chip is unnecessary, and stupid.
I am going to do my best to not get it.

Whatever happened to supervising your children?

I for one do NOT want a chip in me or anyone else in my family. Big Brother anyone?
