there are over 100 elements, so some way of categorising them is essential to understanding their properties. the periodic table is the most natural way of categorising the elements. elements in the same period (horizontal row) have similar molar masses, and elements in the same group (vertical column) have similar electronic structure and therefore similar chemical properties. when the periodic table was first proposed, several elements remained to be discovered: the trends suggested by the periodic table provided good predictions of the properties of those elements.

The Periodic Table is arranged, not only by ascending atomic numbers, but also in such a way so that elements of similar characteristics are placed close to each other. This helps in determining a lot of things including how reactions between elements would occur.

It's to show the weight of the atoms and to show how to use them when you are mixing chemicals for drugs, pesticides, etc.
