He is 5'6" and weighs 160lbs. He is tough and can tackle at close range but if someone gets in a run he can never catch them. What are some exercises he can do to increase his speed? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

really any leg excersize that requires you to come from a standing postion to a kneeling postion and back will help with speed like jump squats (my fav in H.S.) as well as calf lifts i used to get a short 2X4 put the tip of my toes on it and lift up until i was on my tipy toes and back down id do around 100 of thees they are killer but they work. i would also do short sprints like maybe 20 yards as fast as i could but you gotta do quite a few of them i would usually do 20 to thirty take a break and do it again. if you like what you hear and want to hear some ideas feel free to email me i am a H.S. wrestling coach and have many drills id be more then happy to share them all

Know the old adage "Cant teach speed"? There is partial truth to it. Some adjustments to running technique might help and one can always strength train to increase "off the line" quickness or explosive power but you get to a certain point were you either have it....or you don't. Whatever you do, don't let him get dejected. Have his coaches work on his angles of pursuit. Seek out advice about some weight training programs in the off season from a knowledgeable source and keep him running.

Football conditioning is different from a lot of other sports. One play in football you will normally sprint anywhere between 10-30 yards. depending on your sons position. I would suggest that you have him run 10-20 yd sprints, have him do about 10-20 sprints a day for a couple of weeks and he will see himself getting faster

Have him run. I do cross country so this might seem a bit hard but have him run a mile everyday. Look around the neborhood for a easy to remeber 1 mile route. that he can do as slow as he wants. Thats how i started to run. It helps build stamina wich is what you need during a sprint. Might take some weight of of him though :)

wind sprints will give you endurance and speed but to build explosiveness you need to focus on your hamstring muscles and calf's when working out they make some special shoes to help build speed here is a website for an example

Squat thrusts

Also he needs to simply just practice sprinting.

Getting into the right pace can be tough, but once you make a habit of it you can fly.

this is an old trick, try tying a rope one end round a tyre and the other end round his waist then do 60meter sprints as fast as you can that will build him up for more speed.
