It has to stand up to 3 boys.
Someone recommended Gemshine, but I can't find that brand.
I used Minwax clear satin in one room, and it seems to work well except it was hard to apply with getting swirl marks.

Polyurethane is a very strong and durable finish. Brush it on slowly and do not shake the can it came in or even pour it because it will make bubbles that is almost impossible to get out.

Smiles...Ah the joys of boys.

Certainly both 1 & 2 offer valid notions. I preach all the time about "agitating" any clear coat. Thank you # 2.

Obvious to you is the amount of abuse any floor endures; and on a light hearted note why not suggest to the boys; a couple of things as the parent.

1. Shoes must be removed at the door. A custom I find most valid.

2. FOOD is meant to be eaten area specific. If it happens that the kitchen is floored in hardwood (though I can't imagine why) then perhaps more attention to finish coating is needed.

3. AND again; with all due respect and humor; "If you want to CARVE your name somewhere; do it on the tree in the back yard." :)

I guess I'm confused about "Swirl" On a hardwood floor I usually apply any clear coat/ stain/ etc. WITH the grain.

The Minwax is good, with a couple of coats of polyurethane, for good measure.
