Those bands that have been mentioned so far aren’t actually emo, emo was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. It started in the 1990s and died in the 1990s. For whatever reason, bands like My chemical romance, funeral for a friend, fall out boy, etc. were branded as being emo to the masses but its just a name the media latched onto. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, f*ck, no one knows what emo is anyway, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgamation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo." There’s a lot of diverse music within that category. It’s become a meaningless genre; these new bands that are being called emo are defined so because of the style in which they dress, but the music has nothing to do with that. Like everything else, the media tries to find the next big trend thus changed “emo”tive hardcore into “emo”tional which is obviously nonsense of the highest order since 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.

So to conclude:
My Chemical Romance are not emo.
Rites of Spring are emo.

Well, There's one: Hurt.
Not really emo style, but the lyrics are heart wretching.

Also try Smile Empty soul, Hawthorne Heights. For classics, when emo originated: Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Native Nod, Hoover, Still life, and Portraits of Past

If you ask a question like this, expect sarcasm. Even worse when you qualify it with "please no sarcasm." You will always get what you don't want.

Where emo is at the moment, they all suck. The only band that is worth checking out would be the original emo band, Fugazi. Today, they seem a lot closer to hardcore punk than emo but that's what the rock critics say at least.

Paramore, The Academy Is..., Gym Class Heroes (although they're more like emo rap), and if you're a fan of emo, then try Ok Go's most recent cd, Oh No, or any Weezer cd. You might like them.
Enjoy

(Note: I think emo is dying)
