If you mean in terms of style, I'd say yes. That's why they are creative. Most novelists break some conventional rules to achieve aesthetic effect. Arundhati Roy's novel for example, dismantles and challenges many rules but that is the very abode of its creativity and power, or else it would not be worth paying attention.

I've read "The God of Small Things" but not the other...
Ah, I would not say that book "broke all the rules", there are a few similar books, check out rohinton mistry of "a fine balance"
and i'm not sure what these rules are because while modern its not unconventional.
