If a Patel or Shah or Wong etc go missing? Who would care apart from the family and friend? Will there be the international impact? Is there a selling point for the MEDIA?

I don't think its just about race. I think class has a lot to do with it. If the McCanns were working in McDonalds or worked in a factory I think the public reaction would be very, very different. People just find it so hard to believe that good, respectable doctors could be capable of such a crime.

If you leave your children alone in a hotel room so you can go out drinking with your pals.....................

They are arrogant enough to assume that they are blameless and thatthey portugese police (who i think have shown remakable restraint) are poorly educated johnny foreigners who cannot do their job properly.

I speak with some professional experience when I say that had such an incident occured here there are adequate grounds for a child protection investigation to be sought and implemeted and no amount of social kudos would stop Social Services and the Police crawling all over these irresponsible parents.

Unfortunately we have brough itno this and the whole media circus has made a childs tragic dissappearance into the McCann show.

It horrible that a life is so meaningless, and yet so marketable, when do the t-shirts come out................

In my life I have seen two cases of kids go missing - they were returned that afternoon wondering what the fuss was all about but I can assure you everyone in the community (housing scheme) was quick to offer assistance. I would like to think that this is just down to the parents having money, you might have guessed I am not a fan but hope the kid is okay

If that family created a media circus yes. But any child going missing would be high profile. Was the case of Damilola Taylor covered any less because he was black?

The media are in the business of selling newspaper or advertising time/space - so if they think people want to hear about it - they will report it. They don't really care about the story.

If the McCanns were non Europeans, you are right, nobody would care. Do a search for "Missing Children in Europe" and you will come across a site with THOUSANDS of missing children of all races. Many have been missing for years. Nobody cares.

There's actually a colloquial term for this in newsrooms, Missing White Woman Syndrome. I'm not kidding.

it might.
but a child being taken from a major vactioning spot is big news. some places where this happens intentionally try to keep the media from finding out.

No but agree with the points that class has allot to do with it! but if they were non white it wouldn't have the same media attention until the point they thought the parents did it!.

It has more to do with money. But you are right. If a pretty white child (especially if its a girl) goes missing the world goes in a panic until it finds one of its one.
