Depends on the amount of the check but if it is over 300 call your local police dept., non emergency number, and ask them about pursuing criminal charges against the writer of the check and what the amount for doing so is.

You could sue in small claims but getting blood from a turnip... well you know the old saying.

There are hundreds of District Attorneys that want you to get your money and fees from this deadbeat. Have you tried calling the DA's office in your city and asking them if they have a check fraud program. Oklahoma will make deadbeats pay twice the face value if they get caught. Missouri used to charge deadbeats 3 times the face value and a fine. I dont know what state your in but you need to be very careful about debt collecting. These non paying folks have more rights under the FDCPA than the rest of us. Federal Dept Collection Practices Act. It may or may not be legal to call or write deadbeats in your state. In spite of your losses, you could be breaking the law by how you attempt to collect your money. Be very careful.

Go to your District Court, Small Claims Division, and take out a complaint. The court usually will notify the defendant to appear. If he doesn't then the court automatically finds in your favor. The defendant then will be served, by a Constable, with a "Show Cause Notice". If he fails to appear in court, he is then in contempt, and can be arrested, and jailed, until he pays the debt, and all costs incurred.

Hire a couple of guys with middle names of "the" to go down and 'persuade' the client to pay up, for his own health.
