Actually, America has had a profound history of discrimination, not that discrimination is a good thing, but seems to be a sort of "initiation ceremony" to becoming an American and accepted. It was done during the 50's with Natiive Americans, Japanesse American's during WW2..Although it also had to do with paranoia over in-country saboteurs, Its been done with black people, red people, yellow people, all sorts and colors. So when you say Affirmative action is to make up for slavery, I couldn't agree less, since it applies to more than just the black community. There hasn't been a slave in quite a LONG time, so one can not argue that they are feeling the effects of it through 2 or more generations of their family.Companies, Corporate America and anyone else shouldn't have to be forced to fill a quota wish any one group of people. They should have the right to ask..."do you meet our requirements for this position".. And if you don't, you don't get it. Affirmative action has been used to put people in places they don't really belong now days, when it was originally instituted to help over-ride good ole boy monopolies. That kind of victimhood of feeling unfair is what socialists want you to feel, most usually camping in the liberal / Democratic party.
America seems to be plaqued with this liberal "feel-good" program to make all welcome and better, the only problem is...everyone wants to be the good guy and act like Santa Clause, but none of these socialists understand or seem to care that you have to take from someone or make a law stealing from the someone, to help the less fortunate. Although this doesn't sound all so bad in general for the sake of helping the poor, it ends up robbing the people whom were talented, motivated, and being prosperous to create much needed jobs, opportunities and keeping the economy going.
Asylum and refuge is different in the fact that it is a way of providing ease to people wishing to escape persecution from their own country. Affirmative action is unconstitutional in its very context that it takes a group of peoples and elevates them to receive opportunities they might not otherwise have. Since racism and any similar actions are illegal and can be persued through personal or organizational means, there is no need for affirmative action today. Yes, I know, prejudice still exists, it isn't a perfect world, but making an equally unconstitutional law or guideline to force perfection doesn't work perfect either or excuse the flawed premis.
On the other hand, one could talk at some length how black society never really "integrated" into American culture too. They had Band stand, you made Soul Train, for instance. You find equivalent mirror image magazines, TV programs, talk shows, College funds, etc. The point is...there has been less integration as much as there has been advancement, equalization, opportunity and development. Not saying that this is a bad thing, but it is fact.

I don't know ...it's like jumping out of an airliner with a bag of money! You never know where you're going to land. This racial stuff? Might as well jump without the chute! For all it matters it won't matter what condition you're in when you land and no ones going to care where you land.
As Long As They Got The Money!!

Are you going to mention the whites who come from Canada, Germany, Russia etc? Oh, and what about the asians from China and Korea etc, or the Hispanics from Latin America? Its VERY absurd to point out Africans only, when the other nationalities/ethnicities I mentioned benefit from affirmative action.

African Immigrants outperform EVERYBODY black or white not just blacks. Id rather have U.S. citizens (regardless of background) to benefit from affirmative action. All grad school classes consist of majority foriegn nationals and few American born citizens.

Yah know. I'm not trying to be racist. But I don't think you should divide your self's. Especially not with Africans.
And as far as decedents. You Americans are descents of THEM not the other way around buddy.

I especially want the ones who are fleeing oppression (i.e. the SOUTHERN sudanis, who've suffered more than the darfuris have for the past 2 decades but unfortunately never become cause celebres....) to immigrate to the US.

there are no boundaries to the PC ideology that has affected america and, has caused many purpose intent programs to bend backwards and cater to another "victim." thanks to this push into our homes by the civil rights movement we are slowly a dying breed who, I don't doubt, will be run by another government in the near future because we are so worried about hurting someone's feelings that we submit to their demands.
