What do you think of it? The more I hear it, the more I fall in love with it ... it's a little odd, and I kind of had to wrap myself around the spelling, but It's got the beautiful romeo and juliet-esq namesake.
So, what do you think of the name Deirdre? What kind of girl do you picture it on?
Also, I think I like the pronunciation dare-dra best, but It can be pronounced dare-dree, deer-dra, deer-dree, deh-ee-dra, deh-ee-dree, and I'm sure that there are plenty of other ways that people pronounce it that I just dont know about it. Which pronunciation do you like best?

I've always quite liked Deirdre, and both deer-dra and dare-dreh are nice (and equally-valid) pronunciations. I'm sure your favorite is the dare-dreh form, but you can hear it said here just to clarify: http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages/girl-names-d-g.html I wouldn't say it any other way, however.
You might also like Isolde, for a name with a similar "Romeo and Juliet-esq" feel, by the way. ;)

You know, I've never liked that name at all until I read your post and tried to "re-think" the name. When I read your thinking and description the name kinda grew on me!
My problem with the name is that there was a rather grumpy, not-so-friendly girl I knew of years ago with that name. So that memory colored the name and I've always discounted it as a drab name for a drab person. But now I am opening my mind again and can picture it almost a bit exotic and romantic.
I always heard the name pronounced as, "deer-dra"
My husband who's from Scotland (and is sitting nearby so I asked him!) said in Ireland it's pronounced "deer-dra" and that in the UK... in England and Scotland, it's pronounced "deer-dree."
Of course, right away he referenced the movie, "Ronin" w/the Deirdre character played by the pretty Natascha McElhone... so she is kind of how I would picture a Deirdre now!

Hi
It's a sweet name but you'll have trouble with it till your daughter learns to say it herself. Think of your dau in school and how will the other kids respond to the name. Will they hang a nick name on her that she won't like? I don't picture a girl of any kind because any kind of girl could have a name like that.
She will probably be called Dee and I think that's a cute name. How about that? What does daddy think. Never mind what anyone else thinks about it . She will be your child (and dad's too) so you are the name givers!
Good luck .

I think this name is traditionally pro-nounced Deer-Dree and that is the best one too. Any of the others really need a change in the spelling to be correct
Its an old but pretty name but I personally would not use it. It sounds a little forced for me and I like names that are smooth and flowy.
If you love it then use it though, its not a bad name. I see a cute yet fiery, red haired, brown eyed girl with that name. Conscientious but could have a temper! Don't know why but this came to mind! lol!
Best of luck

Love It...I think it's original. The one person I know who has that name is very special and unique. (Deer-dra) is the pronunciation I love the most.

For some reason, I have always hated that name.... I don't know why, but I just can't stand to hear it. At least it's not Emma or Ava or Madison....
If I had to pick one, I use the pronunciation of Deer-druh.

This is just my opinion, but I'm not too fond of the name.
I played soccer in college with a girl named Deirdre.
When i think of the name, i picture a preppy looking girl, who's family are millionaires, and they eat fillet minion each night.
I couldn't tell ya... which way to pronounce. maybe deh-ee-dra?
