Ok i got to write an essay from this question. In the face of adversity what cause some people to fail while others to prevail. After reading the book into the wild we had to answer this question then write an essay on it. What does it mean and if you can answer that would be great.

I can give you an illustration from real life.
Kurt Hahn was a school headmaster in Scotland. He was given a problem to try to help with: during WWII the Germans were sinking massive numbers of British merchant ships and many British seamen were involved in survival situations in which they had abandoned ship and were out in the open ocean, sometimes in lifeboats and sometimes with just flotation. Many of these men could not be rescued for many hours and what the British Navy invariably found was that the young men had died and the "old salts" survived to be picked up.
Hahn created a curriculum for survival in adverse conditions which could be taught to young men going to sea. A lot of it was mental toughness and problem solving skills, adapting to the situation, improvising with the conditions and the equipment at hand. The older men just refused to give in and quietly die at sea. They had had many adversities before at sea, some of them had been in ships that sunk before or had heard the stories from others. The younger men needed this mental toughness and attitude to survive when things became disastrous, like a secret submarine attack when you are asleep in your bunk.
After the war, Hahn's curriculum became the basis of the world famous Outward Bound movement to teach young people.

well as for what the question means, it basically is asking when people are have to deal with adversity(adversity means hardship, so when someone is faced with hardship, or a problem in their life, what causes people to fail at whatever they are trying to do because of it, and what causes others to thrive and succeed, aside from dealing with the adversity, at whatever it is they are trying to do.
fome people may fail because they become discourages because of the hardship and they just give up on trying.
others succeed because they feel they need to make it right and whant to prove to themselves they can be successfull.

It's pretty straightforward. When people are faced with tough situations, why do some people make it and others don't? What are the characteristics of someone that can face a challenge and overcome it? Some suggestions would be courage, perseverance, inner strength and determination.

When faced with a problem, some people will solve it and go on so they will succeed and others will sit there and whine because they have a problem and do nothing about it so they fail

Without writing your essay for you, I will just say, some people are problem solvers. "There is more than one way to skin a cat", there is more than one way to get the right answer or result. Positive thinking.
