No back pressure will increase fuel consumption weakening the mixture. In extreme cases the exhaust will glow cherry red for about two minutes before some vital part of the engine melts. Welding a washer in does not really help as the exact position is important. What happens is a pressure wave runs down the pipe and is bounced back the time/distance the wave takes to travels gives a maximum back pressure at a specific engine speed and at that point you get maximum power. The bike and car manufacturers spend a great deal of money on research. If it wasn't important they wouldn't spend the money. Most people when they hear someone go past think what a moron.

I used to have a Laverda1200 with what was effectively a through pipe (c.1980 - 1988). However, it had been properly designed by Laverda specialists to give the right back-pressure. The shape of the pipe was as follows: from the collector box, going towards the back was about 40cm of cone opening out; welded onto this was about 10cm of cone closing down; in the back of the short cone was about 10cm of pipe with about 3cm outside the cone and the rest inside. There was no wadding, there were no other baffles than the 7cm of pipe going back into the short cone. It ran really well. I had to use this pipe for cost reasons - importing an original was just too expensive.
The only problem I had with the authorities was crossing border from Germany to France - I was told to drive a bit slower to keep the noise down. I suspect it would not be the same now. Most of the rest of the 50k+ miles I did on this bike were in the UK.

Having the exhaust stamped only applies to bikes manufactured after either 1985 or 86 for MOT purposes.
Anyway really loud exhausts are a complete pain and just annoy others, so why do it?
I understand having a nice deep throaty exhaust note and the need for a certain amount of noise for road safety purposes, but really loud exhausts, I don't think so it just gets everyone elses back up.

Not that I'm endorsing such behavior, but MAC Exhaust offers reasonably priced replacement exhaust systems for most older jap bikes and the baffles are removeable on most of them. Just a warning, I know this because I recently got an '81 XS 1100 Special that had a MAC exhaust with no baffle. Let's just say I rode it for one day before I called MAC and had a baffle overnighted.

A gutted one with absolutely nothing in it would be the loudest thing.
Why waste your time doing something like this on a jap four which will just sound like a noisy sewing machine instead of a quiet one. Do it to a Ducati!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That'll wake them up at night as you ride home!
The only problem with that is the rest of us get lumped in with you and most of us are rather less ant-social than that!!

If you want "loud" take the whole set of pipes off. Exhaust coming straight out of the head should get the job done.

The loudest exhaust would be straight open pipes, which would make it unrideable and worthless.

The laws have just changed on this. As long as the silencer is not stamped wit "not for road use" or "track use only" it is now legal. as for noise its down to the discretion of the mot tester.
