I think it depends on where you live. Different "words" mean different things to different people depending on the location.
I have a friend that calls everyone DUDE....males and females. In some places...thats a bad word.
We can sometimes offend without knowing just by using words that others defind differently.
I use Hon....alot....but I'm also a little southern. so there ya go.
And Y'all....so there ya go.

No, Hon, you're fine. I call people hon, honey, sugar, dear, precious etc. & some times they think I'm being a smart***, especially on Y!A--but that's just part of who I am.

I don't mind it. I call other girls sister. I call men, pal, buddy. I have had men get angry when I call them pal. They think I am being confrontational. I don't mean it that way.
