Ok so...
First, find a least common denominator, which in this case is 12.
So that would be 2 y/12 and 6 x/12
4 goes into 12 3 times, so you multiply 1*3 to get: 2 3/12
3 goes into 12 four times, so multiply 1*4 to get 6 4/12
So now our equation is: 2 3/12 - 6 4/12
Solve it now, by subtracting 2 3/12 from 6 4/12.
-4 1/12 is your answer. MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT DOWN AS NEGATIVE.
Please note you do NOT need to make is improper to solve. You subtract the fractions, and then the wholes.

2 1/4- 6 1/3
First you need to put both mixed numbers in to improper fractions; 9/4-19/3.
Now you need to find a common denominator(12), and get the common denominator on the bottom; 27/12-76/12.
Now subtract the 76 from the 27 and keep the common denominator; -49/12.
The answer is NEGATIVE 49/12.

Putting into improper fractions gives : 9/4- 19/3
common denominator gives : 27/12 - 76/12 = -49/ 12, which is -4 1/12. I hope you gave me the numbers correctly.

(1/4)(3/3) = (1/4)(1),
and (1/3)(4/4) = (1/3)(1), so...
2 3/12 - 6 4/12 =
-4 + (3-4)/12 =
-4 1/12

2 1/4 - 6 1/3
= 9/4 - 19/3
= (9/4)(3/3) - (19/3)(4/4)
= 27/12 - 76/12
= (27-76)/12 = -49/12
= -4 1/12
