Chances are, this person probably knows on some level that they are being irrational and silly. So, my best advice? Since you can't control him/her, you basically have to control you. Everytime he/she starts talking silly like that just make the statement, "come back and talk to me when you are ready to talk rationally"., then get up and leave. Do this everytime. If he/she comes in and is still not making sense, then this time...you don't just leave the room...you leave the house so he/she can't follow. People tend to change their behavior when they are left alone with their own thoughts for awhile. Just don't waver,....hope this helps.

Why is it so important to YOU that they recoginze they are irrational? Is there a reason that you need them to know they are wrong?
This reminds me of people that argue about politics. A Democrat always wants a Republican to think like they do--can't they see how wrong the other is? A Republican always thinks a Democrat is wrong, and should see things from their perspective.
I imagine President Bush wakes up everyday wondering how on earth he can get Harry Reid to see things correctly. I know the Democrats on the hill are all completely convinced that the President is completely wrong. Does arguing about it change anything?
How about you just decide that this person is an imbicile, and you go on living your life with the knowledge that there is a fool on the planet, and you have to deal with them. So be it. No one, anywhere, lives in a world without a lot of other disagreable, silly, immature, akward, stupid, ridiculous people in it. The problem isn't that others are crazy--the problem is how you deal with their craziness. Learn to deal with it. Who knows, one day you may get elected to an office, and then you'll spend your entire life hearing from those who disagree with you, all the time, everyday, in every way.
The only irrational behavior is to let it bother you. Some people are stupid. It doesn't bother me anymore (but it did take me awhile to get to the place where I can accept their stupidity.)

They probably think you're the irrational one. So sit down with them and try to talk. Ask them why they feel the way they feel. Ask them why they think something should be done one way and not another. And if you disagree tell them why. Don't try to make this a battle of pride. Don't think that you're way is always better. In return, they should do the same. Patience is key. It's hard for someone to see if they are being irrational but if you don't talk about it, then the problem will never get solved.

You cannot reason with such a person and you cannot get them to see how irrational they are being; this is because they do not live in the same reality that you do. People like that will continue with their behavior until they finally see it for themselves...which almost never happens.
Depending upon the circumstances, your only choice might be to walk away to save your own sanity.

You can't reason with an unreasonable person. Unreasonable people can only be steered like a bull and a matador. For your answer, study animal behavior.

The thing about being irrational is that you don't know or care that you're being irrational. You're fighting a losing battle.

If this is a co-worker ignore them, if this is a bf record them and let them view for themselves, if this is a parent ask them what you have done to be punished this way, if this is a neighbor lock your doors.

If you have to deal with them daily, then you know what they are like...........and if they are irrational, they certainly dont see it.......... you can choose to be around them, or distance yourself from them............ they will never see that they have the problem............
