3+6 = 9
now the fractions
(1/4) x 3 = 1x3=3, 3x4=12 becomes 3/12
(1/3) x 4 = 1x4=4 , 3x4=12 becomes 4/12
3/12 + 4/12 = 7/12
3 1/4 + 6 1/3 = 9 7/12
