like tin cans and such.why did they pick goats?

They would eat the paper off the tin cans for the glue that held it on. I am also sure they probably stuck their muzzles into the can for some final bits of food in there, so it looked like they ate the cans

I think the main reason that people think that goats will eat anything is their uncanny ablity to survive anywhere. Goats can each things that other animals.
As far as tin cans, goats are often used to "clean up" areas that have alot of trashy plants, weeds and undergrowth because they will eat these things. Dumps in the early part of this century used them and along with the weeds and undergrowth the goats, who like the tasteand smell of glue that held the labels on would chew on tin can. Suggesting to passersby that they were acctualy eating the cans.

I am not sure of tin cans, but while visiting Bush Gardens I had the opportunity to pet some goats. I had about 4 around me and I realized I was actually being pulled one way and another. As I looked to see what was happening I found one goat had swallowed the bottom part of my shirt (still on me by the way), another had half of my camera bag's strap down his throat and another was trying to eat my pants. Another was eating the flowers off my flip flops.
My hat fell off and another grabbed that. I just pulled and out came my stuff right back up (so glad they don't upchuck when this happens).
so, I think they eat pretty much anythng.
ps never got my flower back

Because the goats eat the paper labels off and lick the glue off the can. People THOUGHT they ate the cans.
Cows are actually worse than goats at eating strange things. They even make cow magnets to put in the cow's stomachs to catch nails and other metal objects so they won't puncture the cows stomach or intestines. I had a cow that ate a pack of cigarettes with a butane lighter in it. The cow was fine but my son nearly had panic attack looking for his cigarettes. :-)

They used to eat the paper labels from tin cans & people thought if they could eat a metal can, they could eat anything.

Because some goats will try to eat just about anything - clothes, rope, paper, etc. They are easy to feed in that they don't need special pasture. They can survive where other animals, particularly cows and sheep, would not.
