It sounds more like a sprain, Ice it 20 minutes, no longer or it gives the reverse effect, every hour, elevate it on a pillow, this will relieve any pressure, Lastly when you need to be up and moving around wrap it with an ace wrap to give it support.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Unfortunately, the only way to tell for sure is with an x-ray. I have had patients come in with a bruised and swollen ankle, and it's nothing more than a sprain. Then again, I have had other patients who come in with little to no swelling and bruising, and they have a fracture. The way you fell makes me think that you could easily have a lateral malleolar fracture. Easy to fix...a walking cast or brace should do it.
Don't put off going to the doctor...if you DO have a break and it heals incorrectly, you will have pain the rest of your life. The only way to fix it after that point is to have the bone surgically re-broken and properly set. Save yourself the trouble.
Best of luck!

I had relatively little swelling the times I've broken my foot. I tried to deny it the first time - I heard a definitely crack and somehow went to bed thinking I was imagining things, and then woke up a couple of hours later in horrible pain, but still almost no swelling. The second time, again I didn't have much pain at first, and little swelling (and very little bruising), but the pain got marvelously intense after two hours or so. I could still sort of walk on it, too.

Quit freaking out and go see a doctor. They are trained to help you and this is not a life threatening ailment. You could just have a bad sprain but you could have broken something and the worst they will do is put you in a cast and give you some great drugs to ease the pain.
PLEASE relax and go see a Dr. ASAP...
PS.. my son and daughter in law are both Dr's and you would love them...

im sorry if you dont wanna go to the doctor but you might need to. for now use rice Rest Ice Compression (ace wrap) and Elevation (above heart) if you really really dont wanna go to the doctor, at least go to target or cvs and buy some crutches, you wanna stay off your foot for a few days, or it might not ever heal. also buy an ankle brace, or even better an air cast. an air cast would be best, it would immobilize the joint letting it heal faster. a brace wouldnt fully immobilize it, but would help some. but my best advice would be to go to the doctor
hope you feel better soon =]

Maybe asking us isn't the right way to go since we have no way of seeing the injury ourselves. Any time you think you should go to the doctor, even if you don't want to, you should. People make all kinds of excuses not to see a doctor and sometimes they pay with their lives or a more serious condition. Knowledge is the best way to go.

Go to the doctor anyway. If you heard a crack, I'm guessing it's broken.
