It was a brilliant tragic story. I hate that Toole took his own life so early. He could have contributed much to the wealth of American, twentieth-century literature. That sounds cold and selfish doesn't it? Forgive.

I hated it. I found the Ignatius character so irritating that I couldn't finish the book. He was totally unsympathetic and annoying to me. He got on my nerves too.

I LOVE it. It, along with Catch-22 (Joseph Heller) and Handling Sin (Michael Malone) is on my top ten contemporary hits list.
Frankly, I can't see why anyone would hate it. It's hilarious.
