UK no it is not it is classed as filtering it was a grey area but cases have been won now when cars have pulled across when a bike has been filtering M.A.G & THE B.M.F
will be able to give you more detailes,
but as long as you do not pas the front stationary vehicle you are not comiting an offence,

it is one of the things that the last two gov say helps keep conjestion down also is enviroment friendly as a movig vehicle does not polute as much as a vehicle sat in trafic.
for all those who go on about highway code i think you should go out & buy a new copy & then sit down & read it,
i buy one every year & read it,

I worked as a motorcycle instructor and filtering through traffic is not illegal. It should be done safely and at no more than walking pace. It is even legal for a motorcycle to overtake on double white lines so long as the lines are not crossed. Many car drivers don't understand the rules and wrongly get annoyed at motorcycles passing them when they are stuck in a que. lets face it if we had to sit in the que we may as well be in a car and making the que worse.

No, its only illegal if they go against signs or lights.
There is no specific rules for how many vehicles are side by side in the same lane as long as it isnt excessively dangerous.
Bikers are far more responsable then the average car driver. Afterll, in an accident they know they are going to come off badly if they hit anything.

Also they have to pass on the right hand side of any vehicle in the same lane.

As stated by some of those who have answered this question in the UK it is legal. It has already been shown by the quote from the highway code. Those who think it illegal have obviously never observed police riders, motorcycle paramedics, etc. read the code and beware of those who 'think' they know the answer!

It depends on what your state laws are. Some states allow it because they understand about air cooled motors and the effects of standing traffic. Check your local state legislation.

I failed my first Advanced Motorcycle Test for NOT filtering through traffic. The tester was a police motorcyclist.

The principle was i) that it is not prohibited; ii) I was not taking advantage of one of the key characteristics of a motorcycle.

In every situation, including filtering through traffic, it is necessary to take care. Go at an approrpiate speed and look out for cars, vans, and trucks changing lane.

No, it is perfectly legal and often the safest option. The biggest threat to bikes is caused by car drivers, to be at the front of a queue is the safest place to be.
Its also the best reason to ride a bike, who needs to be stuck in traffic?

A lot of wrong answers here. The asker is in the UK where we are governed by the Highway Code;

"71: Manoeuvring. You should be aware of what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring. Look behind you; use mirrors if they are fitted. When overtaking traffic queues look out for pedestrians crossing between vehicles and vehicles emerging from junctions."

not in california it isnt....but most states frown on it even tho it isnt specifically in the state law saying for or against. but that DOESNT green light a squid to fly at mach 1 on a rice rocket just because the bike can fit even in california. the code specifically says that lane splitting has to be executed with due caution. nowhere does it say.....imitate the blackbird down the strip.
