10 answers

x + 2y = 8 subtract x from both sides
2y=8 - x divide both sides by 2
y = 4 - ½x

If you do the same thing to both sides of the equal
sign, equality is preserved or any other relation is preserved.

Always remember to isolate the variable you are solving for. You want to have that variable, Y in this case, alone on one side of the equals mark.

first, subtract x from both sides (the x's on the left cancel out)
-x +x +2y = 8 -x
leaves you with 2Y=8-X
now, divide both sides by 2
2y/2= (8-x)/2
Y=4-1/2x

You can't get an actual answer in this case, because several values will work to make the statement true.

Isolate the y term. First, subtract x from both sides: 2y = 8 - x. Then, divide both sides by 2: y = (8 - x)/2, and that is your answer. The other answerers are correct, namely, that you will not get an actual number. I hope this helps!
