How do I know if mine is plugged up?
My truck is a 1995 Dodge Ram with V-6 and 239,000 miles
I believe it has been running rich cause the pait near exhaust pipe has a tan color and smells a little rich in exhaust fumes.
If it is severly clogged up can I run a pipe off Y pipe straight back to a cheap muffler?

I live in Florida no emmision or vehicle inspection laws.

This truck has no power. I have noticed have to drop to 4th gear on hills I use to climb in 5th
I was not sure if cat was plugged or lost power from so many miles.

to find out have a back pressure test done on your exhaust.this is done by removing your ho2s sensor pre cat convertor & instaling a pressure in its place. start your engine let idle if the gauge reads more than 1.0 to 1.5 psi id say you have a restriction but i would have tested before you replace it . because what your describing could be caused by several diffrent promblems.

If you are not required to have a cat. you can go buy a muffler that clamps on to your pipes. Hacksaw the cat out of the system and put in muffler. You should be able to find the muffler at auto supply. If it been running rich it would plug your cat.

depends on your county's IM code, some countys do not require an emmissions test on that old of truck, but I would check before I did anything, also some trucks computer require the OE Cat due to exhaust temps and the O2 sensor that are inline with the Cat

Good Luck
