I am a College student and my boss said he is going to look into my school record to see what classes I am currently enrolled in. Can my boss go into my school records and see what classes I am currently taking w/o break law if he does not have my permission? It's kind of urgent so any advice would be helpful thanks.

I am in the united states. I am not trying to give my boss any of my information he said he can get into my school files without my permission and that bothered me and seemed like a break of rights.

In most countries your boss cannot get into your school records without your permission. You didn't say where you are, but I think he needs your permission. Is it your grades that are needed as part of your job application? If so, just provide those, or give permission for him to get those.

No, your boss cannot do this without your permission. There are laws called the FERPA laws which forbid anyone, other than those affiliated with the school itself, from going into a student's records. Of course, if he suspects that you are lying about your schedule restrictions or qualifications, he does have the right to fire you, and if he asks you for permission and you refuse, that may very well be what happens.
This falls into a situation I see a lot, which may be coercive, but there is little you can do about it. I've had parents who refused to pay their child's tuition unless the child gave permission for them to not only see the records but talk to the child's professors. A friend's son just bought a vehicle, and the car dealer refused to turn over the car unless the son gave him a formal copy of his class schedule. Illegal, but he wanted the vehicle, so what could he do? A lawsuit costs too much.

No, it is illegal for your boss to access your school records without your consent
the only instance I know about where an employer can can access your curriculium is through a school - to - work program which generally is found in high school
READ Excerpt of this program --Below.
Are you in this kind of program?
Simultaneously to developing the on-the-job training, the work-based learning coordinator will develop a Related Instruction Outline which is included as an addendum to the apprenticeship Standards. This identifies the core academic areas in which the apprentice must receive school-based learning during the course of the apprentice program. Where specific vocational programming related to the occupational area cannot be found, the work process needs to be analyzed by the employer to help identify academic courses necessary to develop foundation skills. For example, math courses would be identified as critical in an electrical apprenticeship. Sources for all related instruction must be identified before an apprenticeship program can be approved. In registered youth apprenticeship programs, the secondary school must identify which classes will be available to the apprentice during high school experience, as well as which classes the apprentice will attend after graduation in order to meet the related instruction requirements. In an effort to raise the occupational skills standards of the students, whenever possible, NH Community Technical College courses should be investigated and emphasized. The particular classes which will provide related instruction at the high school level will be identified in the Collaborative Agreement

I would check with your schools department of student services or academic services and ask them about what their confidentiality policy is. Explain to them the situation as you explained it here and see what they say. Many times they will not give this information out to anyone other than the student or family member in an emergency.

No he can't. Even when I worked in my schools IT department I had to supply them with my class schedule.
