Hubby uses chopsticks to pull out hairballs from my drain. You could also try putting some baking soda down there and following it up with a cup of vinegar to move the toothpaste.

There is probably a fault in the hydraulics design of the drain system which is causing the water seal in the trap to be lost - usually when the lavatory is flushed (which is almost certainly on the same drain run). This allows sewer smellls to enter the house. You might need to look into fitting an air admittance valve (dervo) which would easily cure this - but you would be better getting someone to look at it for you if you do not know what yu are about. If it was me I would have the contractor back to sort it.

Those liquid drain uncloggers have never worked for me either.
Disconnect the p-trap under the sink and clean it out. If the clog is farther down you may have to get a snake, they're about $9 at the store to get it.

Give the 10 to EL88. I just answered this same Q a minute ago; and do often.
In my notion about adding any chemicals to an already fragile environment; and not wanting to WAIT; I always remove the "P" trap first. I suggest purchasing NEW compression washers and re-install.

if your stopper is the popup kind,as i have. take it loose from under your sink, first remove clip holding pull rod to stopper, then unscrew the lift rod from drain, pull stopper out of drain and clean it. sometime the j trap is plugged, this can be remove easliy also by just loosing the plastic or chrome nuts and slide it off, be careful should have water in it.
i tried the barb cleanout rod for hair and etc, but it still wouldn't clean the stopper off, and that was my problem.

Have you tried boiling water with washing soda crystals (sodium carbonate) dissolved? Great for unblocking sinks
