It's believed to be the part of the brain that handles short term memory. If it shrinks or deteriorates for some reason, you have trouble remembering what's on the grocery list, or why you went to the garage, but you still remember last year and ten years ago. It's generally the first area affected in Alzheimer's Disease.

The hippocampus is believed to be responsible for autobiographical memory/episodic. Basically in the process of new memories. After a period called consolidation the hippocampus isn't involved with that particular memory anymore, long term memory basically.

If you damage your hippocampus your going to be impaired in creating new memories.
