That is because your skies are too couldy, and maybe also due to industrial pollution (smog) hanging over your city. Often the street and advertising sign lights bleed so much illumination into the sky that you cannot see the stars clearly.

You need to get away from the city. There are too many lights and this hinders being able to see the stars. I live out in the country where there are no street lights and on a clear night you can see plenty of stars. It is so beautifu, and if you're lucky you can see an occasional shooting star, along with the milky way.

Most likely due to "light pollution." Artificial lights at night have the effect of obscuring the stars. Go to some astronomy websites, and you'll see that astronomy hobbyists and professionals alike take this matter VERY seriously.

I vacation in rural Maine once in a while, and on a very clear night, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Can't do that where I live, though (southwestern Connecticut).

It is light pollution. It is the bright city lights out shining all but the brightest stars. You can still see the stars from rural areas, like national parks. If you want to do something to help reduce this problem, join the international dark sky association.

I observed for years from downtown Toronto, which probably has worse light pollution than Hamilton. The stars are still there, you just have to look carefully to see them through the reddish haze of smog in the "Golden Horseshoe":

I'm located right at the top centre of that map.

as well as pollution if you live in an area with a lot of artificial light (e.g. streetlights) it makes the light from the stars harder to see

Oh, I see you are in Canada. The US took the stars back from Canada on September 1st.
