Because of the high voltages generated it could simply be an excess of steam in the wrong place that will cause it to arc. Capacitors are notorious for breaking down in humid environments, so this is not unusual. There is also the magnatron - the part that creates the microwave shortwave radio frequency that cooks your food. Very often the board the component sits on gets cooked by it's own energy and charrs - making a high resistance path for the 800watts your pushing into it. Add a little steam to that, and the resistance drops enough to cause a flash-over which may be through the board structure. The resultig spark heats the steam pocket and it explodes - usually with a smell of burning resin/plastic. It's not economical to replace the component - so time for a new unit.

The oven is always the best way to go, I've tried the microwave and it never seems to cook right, maybe it's too soft or too soggy or some spots still might be cold in the inside, so I would rather wait the 35 minutes and it will be perfect. : )

I use the oven for everything. I don't even know why I have a microwave because I never use it.

Depends on what the food is and how much time I have. Frozen burritos go in the microwave because they'll still taste fine...if I have time, I'll put TV dinners and pot pies in the oven because they taste more "real."
