There are three different types of wasps: parasitic, solitary hunting and social. Most of us have probably never even seen the first two types, but we all have seen social wasps. The reason their called social is because they like hanging around humans. Further divided, there are three different types of social wasps.
The first type of social wasp is called a yellow-jacket. These are the things that most people get stung by. They scavenge sweets and protein-rich foods, and commonly infest open garbages and outdoor dining areas.
The second type of social wasp is the hornet. These also sting, but not as much as yellow-jackets. They commonly make nests in trees and shrubs. The bald-faced hornet, a large black and white wasp, is the most commonly encountered member of this group.
There's a third type of social wasp called umbrella wasps. These also sting sometimes when protecting their nest, but not as much as the others.
Also, in case you were wondering where bees fit into all this, they are from the same order as wasps.

A yellow jacket builds their nest in the ground mostly. A wasp about anywhere as does a hornet. A hornets nest is kid of cone shaped. A wasp nest can be about any shape depending on the size. Very different than a hornet. I have been stung by all 3. a hornet is worst.

A 'yellow jacket` is a kind of wasp.
I believe 'hornet` is another name for wasp,
but am not quite as sure of it.

Species mostly. Wasps are their own while hornets and yellow jackets are colony based insects.
