Argiope aurantia or American Garden Spider does

but

Araneus diadematus, European Garden Spider does NOT.

So, I guess it depends which garden spider you are referring to

They coat the zig-zag with a protein that reflects ultraviolet light. Now, the insect looks at it and sees a big, white flower.

Well morph has google. Anyway, they do it because it's easier for them to move around on because of their long legs and they do create an illusion of a flower in the sun.
