Chickens evolved from dinosaur relatives. All birds did, in fact.
A group of creatures called the archosaurs, which is a very large group of very very old animals that evolved from reptiles, eventually broke off into the forerunners of birds, dinosaurs, and mammals. Birds came very late. Mammals too.
One modern archosaur is the crocodile.

The dinosaur came first. The chicken is an advance from the dinosaur.
Of course there were some dinosaurs smarter than chickens, and there are many birds smarter than chickens.

It's backward. Chickens are advanced dinosaurs, not retarded dinosaurs :)
Chickens (and other birds) are the descendants of dinosaurs. You can start humming the theme from "Jurassic Park" now.
