I plan on moving to San Diego in the summer 08 once I graduate from college. For those of you who live there, what is the average cost of utilities for an apartment?

It depends upon what you're required to pay. I'll give you rough amounts for what we pay per month for each type of utility.

Water/sewage: About $40
Electricity (we don't have any gas appliances): About $60-$85
Trash: $8.50
Cable/Phone/Internet (bundled): About $120

Hope this helps. Keep in mind that not every place will charge you for water/sewage and/or trash (this is the first place I've ever lived where I had to pay these!!), but it should give you a rough estimate. Also, this is for a 2-bedroom 2-bath.

PS - forgot cell phones. We have a 3-line plan thru the Cingular Nazis and we pay about $90 a month, including the ridiculous number of surcharges tacked on by the government.

I live in a 2 bedroom apt in Pacific Beach and pay around $50-65 per month for gas and electric. Most places near the coast do not have AC and if you do, it's not really needed except for a few days a year. You only need your heater at night during winter maybe like 10 or 15 nights a year, at least for me. Some people I know have never used their heater, so it kind of depends on your tolerance and how much you wear around the house. If you live inland it's hotter in summer and colder in winter so your utilities might be a little higher if you use the AC and heater more, the coastal areas have the most mild weather.

Cable and internet depend on your provider and what package or services you choose. I pay about $105 for a great package from At&t for TV and internet, get all the channels and I switched over from Time Warner Cable b/c it was a much better deal, if the area you live in offers At&T Uverse TV and Internet service get that over Cox, Comcast or Time Warner. I was paying $130/month for with TWC with much less channels.

If you live in the City of San Diego you don't have to pay trash fees b/c it's free.

Most apt's inlcude water and sewage. But when i lived in a single family home with 4 roomates it was about $50-70/month.

Ballpark figures: less than $50 a month most months; if using air conditioning or heat a lot, maybe up to $100 a month.

As the other poster said, this won't be a significant expense; rent WILL be. I don't see any advantage to an "all inclusive" rental cost as one way or another, you will pay.

It depends how attached you are to air conditioning. Gas is outrageous though.
