I have heard of this happening...I remember a story about a woman I think, who had a bad bump on the head and when she came round spoke in a foreign accent and every one thought she was taking the piss, but she couldn't help herself. I'll google for a link.
Or should I say....'I vil goowgel fowr a leeenk'
Here you go, Foreign Accent Syndrome...probably slightly different from actually speaking in a different language, but just as interesting. Also mentions a similar case to the Polish guy you asked about....
Must dash....off to hit my hubbie on the head with a frying pan...maybe I will wake up with Sacha Distel

Update....just whopped him one with the Teflon King....he did mutter something unintelligable as he came round, but it didn't sound like French to me. Mind you, the blood gurgling in the back of his throat probably doesnt help....

He must have been able to speak English before! It could be something like a patient I onced looked after (no, I'm not Dr McCann) years ago who was born and spent 1st 5 years of her life in France. They then moved to Scotland where she grew up obviously speaking English. By the time she was an adult she could not remember any French but in her late 60's developed Altzheimers. As the disease progressed she lapsed back into speaking French until towards the end she spoke only French and no English at all.
probably that is completely irrelevant and I apologise if it is. was just a thought!!

It's a bit like the story of the guy that was found in Kent last year wandering soaking wet on the beach. He was looked after for months (in Kent) and didn't utter a word although he did play the piano rather professionally. After a world wide search to find out who he was and where he was from he turned out to be a fraud.

Wow like when a radio is dropped it switches stations. Interesting. I believe it's possible, but it's nothing I'd bet on 100% but it's very interesting to think the brain could work this way. They say someone who has lost their memory by a head injury, they could remember it by another bump on the head. The wires are crossed and then uncrossed. Interesting.

Maybe he got bored of pretending not to know English.
Nah, I'm joking.
I've heard of cases like this before. The human brain is amazing.

This answer is pending.
Before doing any research, I'd say he affected some part of the brain which processes language, if he had not spoken english before.

I think he must have known English before, maybe from childhood. I'm skeptical about these stories since there are so many frauds out there.
