To escape from reality I guess!
An indulgence into a fantasy world.Lots of reasons behind this escapism. Its a 'decent' way to lust after the opposite sex also & may be a reason why marriages fail cos subconsciously the guy falls in love with the heroine & vice versa & then it doesnt take long for him to be bold enough to check out the wife next door!People who have nothing much to do watch movies-time killers hobby i guess. Some movies are constructive to us but its hard to find 1 these days. Many things that happen in movies do not happen in reality so that why I say it could be an escape from reality.I was a movie addict myself in my teens.Busted a lot of money on it which I regret today as its done more harm than good to me.

Escapism. Escape from reality. The world can be very ugly and we retreat to a fantasy world in movies. Not fantasy in a fairy tale like sense... but a world much like the way we want, be it futuristic or simply a little less cruel. So the more the realities of our lives get a little bit rough on us, the more we get drawn to movies.
Also, we want to identify ourselves to the onscreen characters in doing all those things we cannot normally do in real life. So, through movies, that craving is somewhat satisfied. Like for example, the "Die Hard" or "Lethal Weapon" movies... as a law enforcer myself, I always want to do all them stunts and shooting and in the end, get the bad guys (and the girl) and solve the case. In real life, I have never fired my gun at the bad guys or have been in car chases (at least not really like in the movies).
And for the art of storytelling. Even the first men that walked on earth felt the need for it. Both to tell and to listen. I believe that such need evolved to become one of the basic foundations of culture as communications went beyond generations as stories were told and retold by the members of their tribe on to the next.... and to nearby tribes
Therefore, watching movie is not an acquired habit.... it's an expression of an inborn human characteristic

The desire to drift into fantasy, I suppose. Many are obsessed with this desire and close their eyes to the world around them. But the real world is no less a fantasy, far more exciting than what the movies dish out, which mostly is mush.

Because we are now producing more than 12 movies a day, I say we are still not watching all of them.
There is too much supply.

cause when we are young it's normal to see movies, especially action movies, to learn from the experience of others and inspire in our own lives but later it's not normal to watch movies unless it has a message, good for an adult to learn something from it

when we watch a movie our body generates a vitamin named Vitamin M, this is the vitamin that discourage people from doing anything else. And when people don't have anything to do then they watch movies.
