I just got hired at a restaurant today (Sept. 14). Me and my family are going to Jamaica on Oct. 7. My new job orientation in in a few days. Should I have told them today when they hired me or at the orientation. Would they have not hired me if I told them I needed this time off? Will this make me look bad in the eyes of my employer? Help!!!

I don't NEED the vacation. It's paid for so there is little I can do but waste the money that was already spent on it.

The timing is just really unfortunate. I've been looking for a job for weeks and I'm glad it's finally happened but I'm nervous about losing it.

Honestly if I could, I would rather not even take the vacation, but I did not pay for it and it is not my money to waste.

You should have worked that out in the interview.
Go to your boss today and talk it over but don't be surprized if they fire you.

Normally, you have to inform them within 2 weeks. You should tell them ahead of time. I dont think it is a good idea to wait until the orientation. If they think you can do the job, they definitely hire you. If i were you, I should apply for the job after the vacation or way earlier from the vacation. But it's already happen and it's ok too. Just be honest and explains to he/she. I'm not sure about your employer. If they need people now and the position is start immediately and there are plenty of people applying for the job, I think they will pick the one that is reliable/ready to work. If they are ok for now, and you are one of the candidate that they interested in, you'll be fine.

You should have said the plan in the interview right after he announced that you are accepted. Anyways, you still can try anytime soon so that he can get a replacement. But don't count on it - sometimes, saying it late can cause you to get fired because the reason he hired you is because he needs you. Just tell him nicely that it was planned 6 months ago already by the family and be very hard to not go. And give him a chance to think about it - but if he says no, then you got to pick.

It's usually best to tell a potential employer of an upcoming vacation during the interview process or at least right when you accept the job. Usually they're understanding because you had it planned prior to taking the job. Call them before your orientation starts just to let them know.

You are so feeble that you require a vacation after only three weeks of working?

You're not going to have a job waiting for you when you return. And if you waste that restaurant's money on orientation, you're going to have a hard time getting hired by someone else.

Unless you're not planning to return from Jamaica, you need to NOT start this job, because this guy is going to give you the reference you deserve - and with references like that, you're NOT going to get another job very quickly.

You should tell them ASAP. Time off is a request and they do not have to approve it. I'm assuming you mean a week or two not just a few days. If you take it unapproved, you'll probably get fired. The sooner you ask the more likely you are to get the okay.

You should have told them when you got hired since the date is so close. Make sure you tell them at orientation though

I think you should let them know once you get to Jamaica !!

Call them on OCTOBER NINE 9 and tell that NO WORRY MON.. I"M IN JAMAICA

I think you are smart enough to know the answer to your own question and figure out what to do.

Call your HR dept. and let them know right away before starting orientation. I'm sure things will work out just fine.

I would just keep calling in sick until the vacation is over with. Make sure to use your cell phone and fake cough.
