I have 198* jeep cj7 with a 258 inline 6 and i'm trying to figure out what year it is. I'm rebuilding the engine and the casting number is giving me either 79' 80' or an 81'. the jeep has a SR-4 4spd transmission and a Dana 300 transfer case but it has no vin # complements to a YJ body conversion. So what i'm asking here is what are the differences in the engines of those years and/ or would it make any differences in the kits? Also any extra informations and informative websites would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced

Look around the air cleaner assy, or radiator area ( top ), there may be an emissions sticker, it will tell the year of the vehicle. Also look on the frame holding the radiator and look Up at the part of the hood that you can see when you raise. Those are also places they sometimes put them. The stickers are mandatory, hopefully the converters did not remove it.

VIN number should be on top of the drivers side of the dash --looking through the windshield or the title should have the original VIN number and possibly year of vehicle---or call a dealer service dept with the VIN number--they can tell you. By law, the VIN number has to be visible so police can run the ID or it gets towed with no tags.
