The "chrip" is from the male as you have said. It is part of their courtship ...they are only seeking to send out a warning to other males (as a way to establish territory) ---> "stay away ...she is mine...when I find her!"
They are suppose to bring good luck (Chinese origin). They belong to the "Orthoptera Order" ...the order includes 1,000 species in North America and over 23,000 world-wide.
I have heard you can tell the temperature by how many times they chirp in a minute multiplied by some number (I forgot the formula). But just count for a minute and divide that number into the known temperature and that will give you the number to multiply by for future reference.
They have compound eyes...better to see you with! The males only want to have sex...it is the females that are the scary ones....they have loooong ovipositors! (...which they damage plants by cutting them with their ovipositors used to deposit their eggs in. The baby nymphs resemble the adults but they don't have wings or sex organs. (no wonder they chirp for joy when they get them)

"Crickets are a member of the cockroach family, the noisiest member. They will look for a warm location when the weather starts to get cold and can be a real pest. However in many societies around the world they are considered lucky and are never killed or disturbed."
To get rid of them:
1. Baits- "Place molasses containing 5% food grade DE or use Borax or Comet. This will kill them without a problem. Make sure the baits re out of reach of pets and children at all times".
2. Spray- "You can prepare a spray that will kill the crickets in about 30 seconds if sprayed on them. Just mix 1 ounce of dishwasher soap in 1 quart of water. If you prefer to use vinegar, use 4 ounces in 1 quart of water and it will kill them in about 60 seconds".

As early as 600 B.C.E this was said in the Far East. A house without children and crickets is a house without love and song.

OMG!!! Same at my house. I never seen as many crickets in all my 32 years as I have in this summer. We had so many that they have draw a lot of wolf spiders into our house chasing after them!!! I am ready for some freezing temps to rid the world of bugs for awhile. Can't wait to see other answers about crickets.

I have the same problem.
Only thing that seems to work at shutting them up is my shoe, my cat and a bottle of bleach.
Haven't figured out how to keep them from getting into the house though.
Sorry I couldn't help, but I do know how you feel.
Don't be afraid of them, just be quick with your shoe. LOL!

A cricket on the Hearth is supposed to be good luck. My cat loves to hunt them down and EAT them. I couldn't believe it either but I see it every day.

My girlfriend is afraid of crickets, and it's silly. Just scoop them up in a dust pan and put them outside! Or kill them if you must. But don't be a wus.

You can take the air temperature with them. Just count the chirps in 15 seconds and add 37.
