I'm surprised that the graphics card did not come with a DVI-A to VGA converter.

You definitely need that cross and four connectors around it. Those are the red green and blue signals.

The connector in your other picture is a DVI-D connector (single link) and that will not work for you.

What you need is something like this:

You should be able to get one from your local computer store for a few $$ more.

Edit:
An extra set of connections is never a good thing. You could spend $$ on a DVI-A to VGA cable:

But I doubt that you would notice any difference.

This adapter looks like it will work. The strike line fits into the horizontal cross line. You don't need all the connections when downsizing from DVI to VGA. Just make sure there is a good return policy, because you may be getting a DVI monitor later and if it is soon enough, maybe they will even take the adapter back for you.

Sorry Your plan is NOT going to work. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. Yes, there is a VGA to DVI adaptor, but the output is DVI-Analog (not DVI-digital). So, save your money. The best solution is to buy a new video card for your desktop, one with Digital DVI (or even HDMI) out. Look at Nvidia, ATI, etc.

The reason there is a cross and not just a line is because it's set up for the two types of DVI. you need a VGA Female (holes) and DVI male connection (pins) on the converter. The second one is what you want.

DVI cables can be confusing. Too many different types.

I would recommend googling the following (replace anything in [ ] with the real thing).

[graphic card model #] vga adapter

Both will work. they're really cheap on Ebay. Here's an example:
