for example, if I wear black pants and black shirt, combined with light grey blazer, is it formal?
I'm invited to recruitment session by one of the biggest fast moving consumer goods company next week. My other choise is black pants/black blazer but the problem is both has different shade of black, and I think the difference can be obviously seen.
which one should I wear? different shade of black's suit or black pants and light grey blazer?
thanks...

All black is as professional as it gets - and with a white, gray, or cream-colored blouse, it's terrific. I wouldn't wear two different shades of black though. Black pants or skirt with light grey blazer and a white or cream top.

However, you want to dress according to the atmosphere of the company for which you would be working. If in a managerial position, the black is good. Denotes station or "power." If the atmosphere is more casual or you would be working in a large office, mixing colors would be appropriate - providing the colors are in the same "family" -- like pastel lilac with deep purple or black, cream with almost anything - red, green, etc.

I read where you should not dress "above" your boss.

Business Attire can be defined as professional, classic clothing, modest in nature. I worked as a recruiter for managers for years, a head-hunter if you will, I did not hire "temps", I will tell you the secret I told all my candidates, and it is the secret I used myself. Buy a decent quality, navy blue or gray suit. The suit should be classic in styling, not trendy, and should have a skirt. Wear a button up blouse in a flattering color, wear skin colored hose and closed toe shoes/pumps and the shoes shined. Your makeup should be neutral, but you should wear it. Get to your appointment at least a half an hour early to have time to go the restroom and make sure you are presentable. Good luck to you!

You would be better wearing a different colour than wearing two blacks that don't match. That might look as if you meant them to match, and that would be worse. I would personally wear a matching skirt and jacket if you can get one in time and you think the outlay is worth it for the chance to get the job. Think how much more confident you will feel in a nice new suit rather than something that might have been cobbled together.I always wear skirt suits to work as I think they look so much more classy and businesslike. Good luck with whatever you choose. XX

absolutely not! mix and match by all means, you'll get more wear, not to mention more outfits by doing so.

EDIT: definitely go w/ black/grey combo. Its one thing to mix & match, but its another to try to match the the same color & its not actually a match.
