While Monopoly with 2 players loses that extra complexity and makes things more linear, it is nice with 2 players in where the game ends MUCH faster
Tried and true: backgammon, checkers, chess, chinese chckers, chinese chess, and Careers
Settlers of Catan is supposed to be for 3-4 players, but i've read how ppl have fun playing unofficial 2p variants and adapting their own rules.
Reiner Knizia's Samurai is 2-4 players and is a blast, despite it's higher price

I like Chess and Checkers, as well as Monopoly, Scrabble, and Rummikub. There's also games like Yahtzee, Battleship, and Boggle (boggle is one of my favourites, not sure if it's a board game or not). I also like various card games such as Gin Rummy, Uno, War, Sevens, and Memory. Hope this helps ^_^
